Before each studio session I take a photo using the in-camera flash, so I can compare the results.
First, the in-camera flash Primero con flash
Notice a few things here that I've got wrong on the flash photo of Hilke: shiny white areas on her face; inconsistent skin tone; sharp shadow under her chin; and two-dimensional hair (no depth). What is good about this picture is Hilke's smile!

Using studio lights for natural tones and depth
Se utilizan las luces del estudio para tonos naturales y profundidad
So I set up the studio lights to address the lighting issues. A hair light above/behind to the right gives depth to Hilke's hair. A studio flash to the left with a large diffuser casts a soft natural light with no shiny reflections or harsh shadows, and as a bonus it adds an attractive catch-light in Hilke's eyes. A gold reflector below/right fills in the shadows and gives a slightly warmer colour. The end result is a very natural and healthy skin tone.
